How To Choose The Best Vitamin And Mineral Supplements For Yourself

By Andy G Smith

Several years ago I thought that all supplements were manufactured to the same standards, but I have since learned that this isn't the case. From personal research, I have found that there are lots of factors, that affect the quality and therefore, the effectiveness of supplements. I'll outline many of these now and will explain the relevance of each of the factors discussed.

antioxidants and Minerals - The role of anti-oxidants in the body is to assist with healthy immune functions and to neutralise damaging free radicals. Free radicals are created as a result of chemical processes within the body (particularly respiration and digestion) and are extremely unstable molecules, which damage human cells. Over prelonged periods of time, constant bombardment of our cells by free radicals can initiate the development of degenerative conditions and diseases. Therefore, an advanced intake of vitamins and minerals can help to offset free radical damage and help in the fight against degenerative conditions.

Minerals also have many inportant purposes within our bodies, acting on cells, tissues and organs. All of our body functions depend on minerals to activate the enzymes, which perform those bodily functions.

Another valuable consideration is the quality of the product. As nutritional products only need to be produced to food grade standards to meet the industry's legislation, it is quite difficult for companies to control exactly what goes in to their nutritional products. Products could be contaminated, or might not have the same ingredients in each individual tablet and our bodies' ideally need consistency!

Low Glycemic Foods - Conditions such as Obesity and Diabetes are largely a result of poor food choices. Typically, high calorific foods encourage Obesity, but the significance of high glycemic foods cannot be overlooked. High glycemic foods (high GI) are the ones that sugar fastest once inside your body, such as sweets, cakes and refined carbohydrates (white bread, white pasta, etc). These kinds of foods cause sudden fluctuations in blood sugar levels. As blood sugar levels drop, you will experiences a drop in energy and urges for high glycemic foods (carbohydrate cravings). If you regularly give in to your cravings, this will increase your calorific consumption. Over a period of time your body becomes less able to regulate after dramatic fluctuations in blood sugar levels, which can in turn lead to the onset of type two Diabetes.

Hence, I recommend that if you are going to use food supplements, you must find a producer that sticks to pharmaceutical grade production standards for best results. If you are using, or considering using a multivitamin and multimineral product then it might also be helpful to ensure that the formulation contains advanced levels of nutrition.
